Who We Are

ISLAND BOOKS is a locally owned independent bookseller serving Newport County since 1993.  Our centrally located store in Wyatt Square in Middletown proudly serves both the year-round and seasonal communities of Aquidneck Island.  Rhode Island Monthly has named ISLAND BOOKS the best independent bookstore in Newport County every year since 2006.

At ISLAND BOOKS, we pride ourselves on our carefully chosen selection of titles in fiction, biography, history and current issues. We are the best around for books of local-interest, and have a robust selection of cookbooks and books about gardening and green living. Rounding out our wide-ranging inventory are sections in art, business and personal growth.  Of course, no bookstore is complete without a children’s section full of classics and new favorites for all ages.  Ours is second to none!

Just as important as our books is our outstanding service.  Our booksellers delight in helping our customers find just the right book.  If there is a title that is not on our shelves, we will order it for you, and in most cases have it in your hands in just a couple of days.  We are the partner of choice for local schools, businesses and non-profits.

At ISLAND BOOKS we love what we do and it shows.  We hope to see you soon.

In her admired works of fiction, including the recent The Book That Matters Most, Ann Hood explores the transformative power of literature. Now, with warmth and honesty, Hood reveals the personal story behind these beloved novels.

Growing up in a mill town in Rhode Island, in a household that didn't foster a love of literature, Hood discovered nonetheless the transformative power of books. She learned to channel her imagination, ambitions, and curiosity by devouring ever-growing stacks. In Morningstar, Hood recollects how The Bell JarMarjorie MorningstarThe Harrad Experiment, and The Outsiders influenced her teen psyche and introduced her to topics that could not be discussed at home: desire, fear, sexuality, and madness. Later, Johnny Got His Gun and The Grapes of Wrath dramatically influenced her political thinking, while the Vietnam War and the Kent State shootings became headline news and classics such as Dr. Zhivago and Les Miserables stoked her ambitions to travel the world. With characteristic insight and charm, Hood showcases the ways in which books gave her life and can transform--even save--our own lives.
